Hypertension Case Finding Service

High blood pressure, or hypertension as it is sometimes called, rarely has noticeable symptoms. But if untreated, it increases your risk of serious problems such as heart attacks and strokes.

Around a third of adults in the UK have high blood pressure, although many will not realise it. What this can lead to is heart disease including early and avoidable death through heart attacks. The only way to find out if your blood pressure is high is to have your blood pressure checked and where appropriate, is easily treated through medication and simple changes to diet and exercise.

To combat some of the pressures in General Practice, services such as identifying high blood pressure/hypertension are moving across to community pharmacy. Poundbury Pharmacy are pleased to be able to offer this service to the communities in which they serve. This service consists of an initial blood pressure check, carried out in the privacy of the consultation room, which will indicate if you have high blood pressure. Following on from that, your pharmacist will discuss with you next steps and what you can expect regarding liaising with your GP regarding medication or carrying out further monitoring. Advice regarding heart health, diet and exercise will also be offered during these appointments.
